Pressure Changes Everything
Al Pacino is one of my favourite actors. Maybe it’s his powerful presence, the way he plays each character, or simply the unforgettable roles he chooses. The Devil’s Advocate is a perfect example — a movie that warns you not to get too caught up in its dark story. To me, it feels like a metaphor for getting trapped on the corporate ladder: chasing success at any cost, without realizing you’re giving up your soul along the way. It shows how ambition can go wrong — a reminder of how easily we can lose ourselves when power and status become our only goals.
One of my favourite scenes is when he is interviewing Keanu Reeves on the rooftop, shifting from personal to professional, and asking very directly for his POV about pressure:
“Pressure changes everything. Pressure! Some people, you squeeze them, they focus; others fold. Can you summon your talent at will? Can you deliver on a deadline? Can you sleep at night?”
He is right: pressure changes everything. It reveals what you’re made of. When the stakes are low, anyone can look confident. But under real pressure — deadlines, uncertainty, risk — you see who truly has what it takes.
Some people fold. Others focus.
That’s where discipline steps in. Discipline is the art of doing what you don’t want to do — but doing it like you love it. It’s showing up when you’d rather quit. It’s pushing through when everything feels stacked against you.
In the end, it’s not just talent that sets people apart. It’s the ability to handle pressure with discipline. That’s how you break through instead of breaking down. Thanks for reading!
